Still only day three of our Cuba trip on our one night to ourselves in Havana. This is the restaurant we went to called La Guarida. La Guarida is famous for being one of the locations in the film “Fresa y Chocolate” (Strawberries and Chocolate), which was nominated for an Oscar in 1993. The film is very important in Cuba’s history as it was one of the first films to openly talk about homosexuality and the controversies surrounding the Port Mariel crisis in 1980. I was really excited to go to this place not just for the historical and cinematic significance, but as you will see in the following images, it’s ambience is incredible. You won’t find a place like this in the states purely due to the fact that the building is practically falling down and is in immense need of being retrofitted. We loved it! It was like walking through one of those abandoned places you often see in pictures of falling down Russian/Soviet buildings.
I’m sorry that not all of the photos are in proper focus. It was very dimly lit. I wanted to capture the lighting so I compromised on the clarity of some of the imagery.
Special note: Never put a cigar in a camera bag….
…unless of course you have a sense of humor!
