Secret Agent Moscow – Hong Kong and Book Two in The Works

Secret Agent Moscow - Hong Kong and Book Two in The Works

2014 brought me to Hong Kong for the first time. The trip was short, but I got a lot of inspiration from this magnificent city. Book Two of Secret Agent Moscow has already been written. However, like book one, I continuously am doing research visual research and further research into history and culture. Hong Kong will further influence the characters Ji-Li and Natasha in Secret Agent Moscow – Part Two: Hello, Moscow.

In the meantime, stay tuned for more information on publicity, book readings, signing and more locations that will sell Secret Agent Moscow – Book One: Goodbye, Natasha coming soon this year.

Queer Russia

IMG_0504

(Photo from my trip to Russia in 2006)

Queer Russia by By Laurie Essig was one of the books I read when I was doing research for “Secret Agent Moscow.” I love this article she wrote because it sums up some of the conflicting feelings about queer theory between America and Russia.

Particularly, I love her description of how having a preference for food is similar to having a preference for who we love. I am not sure if I believe that we are born into a sexuality. However, I believe that we are born to love just as we are born to eat, sleep, and breath. Who cares if one person likes Chinese food over Italian food the point it that we need to eat food for nourishment.  What we eat should make as much difference as who we love regardless of gender. The important thing is that we need to love.

Now Laurie brings up a very good point. She says that the concept  of “people are born gay” is probably the best strategy for Russia. I have to agree on that. I agree not because I personally believe “people are born that way.” I agree because it just might be the best strategy to begin to convince people in Russia that when a LGBT person coughs while they are next to them they won’t catch the gay bug. Russians truly believe that being gay is something you catch like an infection.

The conflict is more complex then being LGBT or not. The conflict crosses queer theory and cultural boundaries.

Happy New Year!!!

G’day From Australia!!!

I want to wish everyone a Happy Almost New Year!!!

This last year has been amazing. It was my New Years goal last year to finish my graphic novel, Secret Agent Moscow, get it funded through kickstarter, printed, shipped and in peoples hands by this New Year. All of the above I was able to accomplish and I have many people to thank for helping get where I am today. Special thanks to all my friends and family for being there for me this past year. Thank you also to all the new people I have met who also helped kickstart the book.

As I mentioned in a previous post, you can find the book at the San Francisco comic book store called Amazing Fantasy. Another store at 205 Jackson Street in Japan Town in down town San Jose, CA called Petite Galleria is also selling the book.

I just received the next shipment of the graphic novel. News on more stores selling Secret Agent Moscow and the Amazon.com release will come after I get back from Australia in 2014.

While I am in Australia I am starting work on book two of Secret Agent Moscow!! More news on that to come, too. My new New Years goal is to finish illustrating 100 pages of the next book by New Years 2015. Book Two is scheduled to come out in September of 2016.

I hope you all have a wonderful and safe New Year!!!! here is to another fantastic year to come in 2014!!

Peace & Love,

Jenny

…mostly! Sorry for bombarding you with yet another update right after the last one, but I promised that I would let you all know the first moment the books come in. They are here!

Yesterday I receive three boxes of books which include about 30 books total out of the 100. I should be receiving the rest sometime this week. At least 30 is a good start. it looks like Memphis is the place to be because the rest are still kick’n it there. I’m so happy and grateful for the ones that did arrive. They look awesome!!!

31st Birthday

P1030102

I would like to send out a special thank you to everyone who sent Birthday wishes via mail, text, email, phone and wall post. It was an amazing and beautiful day. I don’t think that it’s ever been quite that sunny and warm around my Birthday. I’m so used to Nov. 8th as a day that always rains. Sunshine was a nice change. 🙂 Peace and Love, Jenny xox

Secret Agent Moscow – It’s the Author’s/Illustrator’s Birthday

Secret Agent Moscow Birthday

Well, technically my Birthday was this last Friday on November 8th. Technically, the books were suppose to arrive by that date too. I was planning on a big Birthday/arrival of the books update for all of you, but as it turned out fate had something else up it’s sleeve.

Instead of the books arriving in San Jose by November 7th as FedEx had originally estimated, the books decided to go on a little road trip and see the world. Yes, it turns out that my graphic novel has a personality of it’s own. I guess that is what I get for writing a story about secret agents who go on an adventure. To all of you who ordered a book in advance, your book has already gone on an adventure and it isn’t over yet.

Instead of arriving in San Jose last Thursday from China, they decided to take a detour to Japan. I’ve never been to Japan and would love to see it one day, but I’m glad my book had a chance to go before I did. After Japan, Friday’s destination was Alaska. I’ve also never been to Alaska. I can’t believe my books are seeing things I have yet to see. I guess Alaska was a bit chilly for them because they darted straight over to Memphis on Saturday. Maybe they wanted to get a glimpse of the King reincarnated. As of this morning they are still in Memphis. They must be enjoying themselves. When and where they will go next I haven’t a clue. My hope is that they will finally get tired of traveling and arrive on my door step something at the beginning of this week.

I will let you know the first moment that they do. So, sorry for the little delay, but for those of you who are expecting a book you can rest assure that yours has already had an exciting life and seen the world.

Happy Month of November and Have a great week!!!

~ Jennifer

Happy Halloween!!!!

Happy Halloween!!!!

Silence is golden!! Well, it can be. I’ve been silent on my blog for the past couple of months. I needed a break. Things are happening. My graphic novel, Secret Agent Moscow, is being printed and shipped. The world is full of endless and wonderful possibilities. Happy Halloween to all of you!!

My Halloween costume is of the Goddess Pandora from Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles which I have just had the pleasure of reading. I highly recommend them.

Secret Agent Moscow – SF – Research – QGTP – Artist Space

31_T1Untitled-2

In this gallery you will see views from my living space in SF. These are the views I saw while I read many books that influenced Secret agent Moscow. These are the views I looked up to while illustrating some of the first images. This time is remembered by my experience with QGTP (Queer Girl Theatre Project) and all the wonderful and talented people I met through this artistic community. Some of the films I made through QGTP were influenced by what I was reading for the graphic novel. This time is probably most remembered by Prop 8 and Obama becoming President. These events and the creative projects that I participated in influenced both the writing and illustrations for Secret Agent Moscow. Here I would like to honor the memory of all those people I met and experiences we shared. Thank you to all of you who were part of some of my crazy ideas and gladly entertained my desire to share Russian Culture and Queer History.

1_IMG_8641

I lived in two different apartments in SF. This was the first one. I lived here for about a month. This view was where I started reading “The Whisperers” by Orlando Figs which is probably one of the most influential books aside from “Cracks in the Iron Closet,” “Wide Open Town,” and “A desired Past.”

2_Whisperers

3_IMG_8643

First apartment view. It was also here that I first got the email from Erin Maxwell about starting a Queer Girl Theatre Project in SF.

4_IMG_2146This is the second apartment, a loft, that I like to call “The Chocolate Factory.”

Another set for “Twisted Lipsticks.” I painted the painting on the wall. It is called, “Soviet Angels.” This image morphed as time passed, but they are the original study of the ghostly faceless figures that appear in Secret Agent Moscow.

Twisted Lipstick was created out of a response to Sarah Palin’s “Pray the Gay Away” campaign. Twisted Lipstick is like a Twilight Zone. Here Sarah Palin (Melanie Case) is transported to Soviet Russia and is told by a Fortune Teller that she is a Lesbian.

Twisted Lipstick was written, filmed and edited in a week. A week from Election Day the film was premiered at the Garage Theatre in SF. Time passed. Election day came. Obama became president and Prop 8 won.

Prop 8 won and QGTP was pissed. So, we did something about it. We came together and started filming the documentary “Love is Free.” A passionate conversation about the aftermath of  Prop 8.

We premiered “Love is Free.” Then we kept on filming. We created a film/performance piece called, “RememberMe.” QGTP interviewed people within the SF community about their life stories on being queer.

After Australia, I lived in San Francisco for a year. There, I met an amazing group of visual and performing artist through QGTP (Queer Girl Theatre Project). My life was partly consumed by working with QGTP on performance art. film, mosaics, etc. The other half was trying to figure out what Secret Agent Moscow was going to be about, what the locations were going to look like, and developing each character’s personality. I created my own walking tour through SF, taking photographs every step of the way. This tour is the same tour the main character, Natasha, takes in the begining of the book. Natasha walks from her place of work at the Old Mint near Market street, through Chinatown, and up to North Beach where Mona’s 440 used to be. Mona’s 440 was the Lesbian hangout in San Francisco in the 1940s. When Secret Agent Moscow is finally published, you will recognize some of the places in the illustration from the photographs here. My time in SF was an amazing and very inspirational and I am happy to share these images with you for the first time.

IMGP2476

So, Natasha does not work at this location. However, I loved the look so much that I decided to model the interior of Natasha’s work to look similar to that of the BellBuilding instead of the Mint.

IMG_9194

IMG_9190

Natasha’s place of work is really the combination of the Old Mint and the BellBuilding at 140 New Montgomery Street.

IMG_9221

This is the Old Mint. Natasha walks out of this building towards Market Street.

IMG_9224

Walking towards Market Street.

IMG_9230

This is Market Street. See that big green building? That was the location for another Mystery/Thriller, the film called, The Maltese Falcon, in 1941.

This image is illustrated in the graphic novel.

IMG_9237

And so is this one except you will noticed that I do not use “John’s Grill” I make up a different name because John’s Grill is under copyright.

I used this image, too. However it is at night.

The is the site of the old Telegraph Exchange. It is now a Wells Fargo bank.

We’re here.

This was Mona’s 440. Mona’s 440 used to be the Lesbian hang out in the 1940s.

IMG_1174

If you walk back to the street light in the photo that has the Broadway Sign, start to walk up the hill, this is your view looking back. Pretend now that you are watching some being chases up this hill.

IMG_1173

Or, maybe it is you who is being chased and you have to run up these steps (in high heels).

IMG_1179

Oh, you thought you got to the top of the hill. Nope, keep running.

IMG_1167

Now when you get to the top, turn to the right and run up these steps. Oh! I forgot to tell you that it’s night and you really don’t want to caught so pick up the pace.

IMG_1134

While you are running up Telegraph Hill you just might get the chance to look up and see this.

IMG_1139

As you run closer you will see this.

Run around Coit Tower and….

[Stop! End of story. you’ll just have to wait for the graphic novel to come out.] 🙂

Secret Agent Moscow – Behind the scene look at the making of the film trailer

IMG_0661Here is an exclusive behind the scene look at the making of the film trailer. For those of you who do not already know, before I starter writing and illustrating Secret Agent Moscow I studied studio art, film, and theatre (specifically set design and scene painting). I wanted to incorporate everything that I learned from college, so I built a stage model with sliding set pieces just for the film. I shot a lot more than what is scene in the trailer, but that is typical when it comes to editing film. A lot of shots end up on the cutting room floor. In addition to the model, I also used a mini red toy truck and a lazy Susan for the Trans-Siberian Railway scene. Go check it out!

7…6…days to go to reach my goal on Kickstarter. Please support the project!!!!

Secret Agent Moscow – An interview with Sophie Spinelle of Shameless Photography

Jennifer_Jigour_Secret_Agent_Moscow_Bio_Photo

(Author/Illustrator photo by Sophie Spinelle)

A couple of years ago I approached Sophie Spinelle about doing a special photo shoot which included photographs of my husband and I in retro clothing, as well as individual shots for each of us. I knew that I would be needing an artist headshot for my graphic novel, Secret Agent Moscow, so I pulled together all the Russian items that I owned, including a red communist party membership book from the 1960s I found online  (See above photo), for the perfect shot. As we were setting up in her studio, Sophie mentioned that she spent some time in Russia in the early 90s and took a ride on the Trans-Siberian Railway. I felt like I found the best photographer on the planet to take my artist portrait. Russia and the Trans-Siberian Railway are featured in Secret Agent Moscow.

If you do not already know Sophie Spinelle and Shameless Photography, her work is not only beautiful and amazing, it also helps women feel good about themselves by promoting positive attitudes towards women’s bodies. She is “a feminist in high heels.” She also has a story to tell. Behind the photographer is a world traveler. Here is an exclusive interview with Sophie Spinelle about Shameless Photography and her memories as child in Irkutsk, Russia. The interview includes images of Sophie’s own self-portraits and illustrations of the Trans-Siberian Railway from my graphic novel, Secret Agent Moscow.

Questions about shameless photography

Can you tell me about Shameless Photography?

Shameless Photography is a feminist, body-positive pinup photography studio that provides a space for people to lift out of their everyday lives and be transformed in old Hollywood stars and classic pinups.

How long did it take to create Shameless Photography?

Shameless was a dream for five years before I started the business in 2009.  Once I started shooting, however, the momentum built quickly.  I was working full-time within 3 months, and last June I hired Carey Lynne to be my partner photographer.

What has been the most rewarding part about taking pin-up photographs?

I’ve gotten to meet such amazing people in my studio!  It’s a thrill when clients write afterwards and share that the experience was transformative in some way for them. Recently a woman wrote to tell me that she found the strength to leave an abusive relationship because of the empowerment she found through her photo shoot. Those are the experiences I live for.

Questions about Russia

When did you go to Russia and why were you there?

I lived in Irkutsk in 1991, just before the fall of the USSR.  My parents, who are artists and writers, were invited to teach art, landscape architecture, and literature at the Polytechnic.  I was nine at the time.

Was it difficult for you? How did you adjust?

I was disoriented but excited by how strange and new everything was. The smells, the sights, the streets, the people — everything was different from back home in Oregon.  Even simple tasks like grocery shopping became adventures. There were long lines, an hour or more, for rationed food like cheese, meat, or vegetables, but we would never know exactly what special food was in stock until we got to the front.  Sorting through the rumors and daydreaming while waiting in line was half the fun.  School was also very different. I loved my brown wool school uniform.  Every girl was allowed to sew her own unique lace collar onto the uniform, and my mom found beautiful antique lace for mine. Many of my classmates were curious about me because they’d never met an American before. Children wanted to know if I had a real Barbie, or a pair of Levis (I didn’t).  One thing that really helped with the culture shock was my deep friendship with a girl named Lena.  Because of her, I felt less out of place.

47_Secret_Agennt_Moscow_Film

Can you tell me about your experience on the Trans-Siberian Railway?

For our journey across the USSR and into Siberia, my parents accidentally purchased tickets on the notorious train #76, which was teeming with illegal activity.  We had a “luxury compartment,” but luxury was relative in this setting.  Duct tape lined the walls, precariously holding the electrical wiring in place as the train lurched along. All day long, men went in and out of the compartment next door, and my parents eventually realized it was a brothel (though of course they didn’t tell me at the time).  Bribes were required to use the sole functional bathroom, and according to my parents black market activity seemed to be behind every corner — although as a child I was a oblivious to all of this. I spent most of my time holed up in our compartment, reading and rereading the two books I had with me: Matilda and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Periodically a man with dwarfism entered our compartment and tossed us packages of black and white photos. The photos portrayed a strange assortment of things: an idol of the Virgin Mary, an American muscle mag, a recipe for cake, a woman’s enormous bare breasts.  The man would come back some minutes later and ask, insistently, which ones we were buying.  In the dining car, we were unlucky enough to witness an episode of sudden and violet emesis. When we finally arrived in Irkutsk, my mom’s friend Dr Galazii greeted us with the horrified exclamation: “Not the 76!”  We were happy to have finally arrived.

hut

Have you kept in touch with people you met there?

I’m still in touch with my dear friend Lena.

How has Russia changed since then?

Corruption was rampant under communism, and from what I’ve heard and read, it is even more rampant now.  Many people are fighting for change, but cases such as Pussy Riot and Shatto show that there is still much to be accomplished.

Did your time in Russia influence you as an artist and photographer?

Absolutely.  It was a formative experience in which I realized that I could take nothing for granted.

How do you feel about Russia’s policy on human rights?

I’m very concerned.  It’s hard for people in the States to get accurate and complete information about how bad it really is.  I hope we can find ways from afar to support the efforts of folks who are in the thick of it, working for change.

48_Secret_Agent_Moscow_Film

Conclusion

Anything else you would like to add about Russia?

In his time lecturing on art at the Polytechnic, my dad was struck by the fact that art historians in the USSR had little or no exposure to Western art after 1907.  They literally hadn’t heard of Pollack, Rothko, Warhol, etc.  They knew who Picasso was, but had no knowledge of anything after the Blue Period.  Censorship had locked out news of any developments in the art world that didn’t fit squarely within the socialist realism framework.

How can people get in touch with you about Shameless Photography?

I’d recommend visiting my facebook page at www.facebook.com/ShamelessPhoto or my website at www.ShamelessPhoto.com. Hope to see you in the studio!
