Camping “Firefly” Style in Los Padres National Forest

I can’t believe I never knew about the TV show Firefly until several years after it was off the air. I suppose I can consider that a good thing as I would probably be even more disappointed when the network took the show off the air after one season.  I’m happy that I can enjoy it over and over again on DVD. There is so much about the show that I love from the writing, the actors to the sets, costumes and music! I love that they tried to talk about some controversial issues and discussed the topic of a Companion in a light where someone who becomes a companion has power and is respected in society. Of course, I’m sure some of these issues are what brought a swift end to the show, but I’ll be forever grateful for what we do have of Firefly.

Firefly was my inspiration for the remodeling of the interior of our Caravan. It was my Husband’s birthday this last Monday and as a surprise I turned part of the interior into an Asian/Victorian-Western/Space Opera Room right before we took off on a camping trip to Los Padres National Forest in California. We also took a day trip to the Tassajara Zen Retreat, passed through the US Army Reserve by King City while on our way to Mission San Antonio – thus the photo with the army tank, and along the coast of Big Sur. There is still more work to be done in the rest of the caravan, but the photos below show the work in progress as well as some extra photos from our camping trip.

It was an amazing experience to get away from civilization and commune with Nature and with the inspiration of Firefly at our horizon.

Peace & Love,

~ Jenny

Production Photography For – “We Women Fuck”

And, no! This film is not porn. It’s based on the other “P” word, Poetry. It is the beautiful, natural, spiritual, and even political visual representation on the way women make love to each other.

Artwork for $3.99

I met my sister, Julie, for coffee today at Moonbeam’s so I could show her my artwork and chat about life. After she left I decided to stay behind and work on some of my drawings for my graphic novel. I couldn’t help but observe a few teenagers/young adults view my work on the walls. They seemed to like it, but left the café with the statement, “Can I get the $3.99 discount?”

It’s tough to be an artist and I believe most artists can agree that it’s a challenge sometimes to put your artwork on the walls, because in a way you are exposing a part of yourself. Even more challenging is putting a price to that art. It is a revelation when you discover that you are, “As an artist,” worthy of that price. I thought long and hard about how each piece was worth to me. It is a combined number that includes the prices of materials, the size, the time it took for me to complete the image, my experience, and how much each individual piece means to me. I stand behind the prices I chose because I know how much went into them.

At the same time I know that artwork is not a necessity (to everyone) and some may not be able to afford the work I display – I do understand. I do also feel that art should be more accessible to people who would otherwise not buy art because of the cost. The beauty in art for me is its therapeutic quality when I create it. This quality can also be reached by the viewer, which is why I’d like to extend the accessibility of art to more people by proposing “Artwork for $3.99.”

From now and until the end of March I will be periodically drawing at Moonbeam’s Coffee. If you see a little women, mid-20s, with a sketchpad, pencil, and glasses and you would like to purchase an original drawing for $3.99 please feel free to come up to me and ask – if you like it, it’s yours. Furthermore, if you would just like to chat about the arts (music, painting, photography, sculpture, literature, poetry, theatre, film, dance, graphic novels or even philosophy) bring up a chair and be my guest – you are more than welcome.

PEACE & Love,

~ Jenny

Below are some examples of drawings I have already done at MoonBeam’s.

The Beebo Brinker Chronicles – West Coast Premiere

Summer Serafin (left) is Laura and Erin Maxwell is Beebo in “The Beebo Brinker Chronicles,” adapted from the novels of Ann Bannon, at Brava Theater Center.
Beebo Brinker Comes to California!

For anyone who is into LGBTQ history or Classic literature, this is the play to see. It is also history in the making as the story takes flight all the way from New York City where it began to San Francisco’s Brava Theatre for its west cost Premiere. I feel so very lucky and fortunate to know  the lead actress in the show, Miss Erin Maxwell, who is a dear friend, and who plays the swaggering Brinker herself – she does a dazzling job at it! Erin is also the founder and artistic director of QGTP (Queer Girl Theatre Project) in San Francisco. It was an absolute joy to see her shine on stage. Along with other strong performances of the characters Beth (Jayne Deely) and Lauren (Summer Serafin) as well as a creative set with an acoustic band as part of the back drop, I highly recommend seeing the show if you can. The show runs till March 13th. If you can make it to the show on the 11th you’ll get the chance to meet Ann Bannon, the creator of the famous Lesbian Pulp classic novels that inspired the play.  Cheers ~ Jenny

“The Beebo Brinker Chronicles” February 25 – March 13, 2010  Written by Kate Moira Ryan & Linda S. Chapman  Tickets $20-$40

Adapted from Ann Bannon’s groundbreaking, award-winning pulp novels of the 1950s and 1960s, Beebo Brinker Chronicles follows the lives and loves of four friends in pre-Stonewall Greenwich Village. Beth and Laura, secret lovers in college, still pine for each other. Before they can reunite, they find themselves entangled in a web spun by Beebo Brinker, a butch denizen of the underground bar scene, and Jack, a flamboyant fop with caustic wit.

Resuming From a Break

It’s about time I get back to bogging and updating my website. I’ve been on an extended trip from November 2009 to January 2010, quite literally in Australia and Europe, and also from art, theatre, and film. Although I absolutely loved the journey to different countries and exercising my travel photography skills, I did miss painting, my graphic novel work and working with my dear friends of Queer Girl Theatre Project. The photos that follow are from my trip to Ayrs Rock,  Australia. Enjoy!

 PEACE & LOVE,

~ Jenny

Self-Portrait as Marlene Dietrich

In more Marlene Dietrich News….

I got a wig for Halloween, not for a Marlene Dietrich costume, but to be Capria Six from Battlestat Galatica (the Space Opera Geek that I am). However, I couldn’t help myself. After trying on the wig, I put on my tuxedo to pose as one of my favorite lesbian/bisexual icons.

Marlene Dietrich – SOLD

Dietrich

I’m so happy that I’m finally beginning to sell my paintings! Being a queer/lesbian artist is sometimes a challenge on both the selling and exposure front. I am especially happy to have sold, “Marlene Dietrich.” I love lesbian art, film, and history and this painting has always meant a lot to me and it brings me joy to pass it on to someone else, especially two wonderful friends!

 PEACE & LOVE,

~ Jenny
